Term 2 Week 1 2019
Welcome back to Term 2.
I trust all had a safe and Holy Easter break. It was wonderful to begin our school term with celebrating mass together at the start of the week. Thanks to the staff and students for their dramatization of the Holy Week story that was published on our school Facebook page throughout the Easter holiday break. Special thanks to Mrs Anita McVeigh and Mrs Anne-Maree Spalding for directing our talented students, to Mrs Emma Daniels for sourcing the costumes, Mrs Rachel Harlen for editing the filming and uploading the presentations and to Mrs Judy Smith for co-ordinating timetables etc. The Easter season is at the very heart of our Catholic Christian faith and as a community we acknowledged, through prayer, Jesus’ death and resurrection and how we at St Saviour’s Primary School strive to be people of ‘goodness’.
Over the holidays, Mrs Monica Conway graduated with Distinction and received the Education Faculty Medal. We extend our congratulations to Monica for the hard work and dedication she has shown towards her studies and wish her all the success in her future teaching career. Monica, we are extremely proud and are very fortunate to have you working alongside us each day and teaching the students of Year 4.
In the coming weeks, we have quite a few things on our radar:
- 2020 Prep interviews will take place in Week 2 and Week 3 of this term. Please make a booking via schoolzine if you have not already done so. Our school admin officers are happy to assist you in making an appointment.
- P & F COLOUR RUN AND BARBECUE: will be held on Friday 3rd MAY on the school oval starting at 2p.m. Children are to wear to school on the day: old clothes (be prepared for stained clothing), closed in shoes, bring a towel, shower/ swimming cap and change of clothes if necessary. All funds raised will help our P & F support the school’s technology and upgrade of play areas. The P & F will be running a sausage sizzle for $2 and the tuckshop will be selling drinks, cupcakes and ice-blocks from 3p.m. - 4p.m. All parents and friends are invited to attend the event with us. Come and join in the fun!
- SCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL: Students in Years 3- 6 elligible for Zone Athletics will be transported by bus to and from O’Quinn Oval on Thursday 9th The whole school athletics Carnival will take place on FRIDAY 10th May at O’Quinn Oval. Parents are asked to drop students to the oval on this day. See sports section for further details.
- NAPLAN Online: NAPLAN online testing for all Yr 3 and Yr 5 students will occur on May 14th (Yr 3 and Yr 5 writing), May 15th (Yr 3 Reading and Language Conventions), May 16th (Yr 5 Reading and Language Conventions), 20th May (Yr 3 and Yr 5 Numeracy). For those year levels, please ensure that any non-essential appointments are not made for those days, as it is preferable for all students to sit the tests at the same time. Should your child be sick on any of those days, they will be able to sit the tests on a make-up day within that week. Should you have any concerns or questions regarding your Yr 3 or 5 child’s participation in the NAPLAN testing program, please see your class teacher as first point of contact.
Thanks for reading.

SERVICE ACTIVITY: Also in the last week of term, classes undertook a service/ outreach activity including things like: Cooking cupcakes to be donated to ROSIES (Year 3), Making up Bathroom/ Personal Care Bags for Rosies (Year 6), Making Easter Cards which were distributed to Aged Care Residents and Hospital patients (Prep -Yr 2).
Fay and Jim Stein from ROSIES, met with the Year 6 students and explained what they do within the community. They also showed the students and staff the back-packs (bedroll) which they have been able to give to some of their clients because of donations made, so we as a school were very excited to be able to assist ROSIES with this through the funds raised in our Harmony Day Free Dress. We have paid for a new backpack to be sent to Rosies, Toowoomba.
SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM: For those continuing with preparation for Confirmation and First Eucharist this term, please note that we recommence with a Parent Information Session next Thursday, May 2, 7pm in the Cathdral Centre. This is followed by another Enrolment Ritual at the following weekend's Mass.
The first Cluster Group meetings are May 5 (Sunday, 10:15am) and May 9 (Thursday, 3:30pm). Paula and I look forward to seeing you there.
ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLY: "We Will Remember Them"
On Tuesday afternoon we gathered as a whole school community to reflect on and honour the significance of ANZAC Day. Thank you to the Year 4 Teachers and students who shared with us a very meaningful and thoughful assembly, which I hope your child was able to reflect on and share in some way yesterday.
In the holidays, after visiting our son in Esperance, WA, my husband and I had the opportunity to go to Albany, and spend time at the National Anzac Centre, which was only opened in 2014. There is much I could share about this amazing place, however, today I share with you these words from one of the final displays inside....
" We will never forget. But as well as remembering those who died, let us not forget those who came home and continued to suffer. Let us not forget the appalling human costs of the war, and of all succeeding wars in other countries. Above all, let us share our stories and think about the lessons we can learn."
LEST WE FORGET
Enjoy the coming week,
Judy
NAPLAN 2019
On Wednesday, the Year 3 and 5 students participated in a practice test for NAPLAN Online, which will take place in weeks 4 & 5 this term.

An information sheet for parents can be found at the following link:
