Cultivating a Growth Mindset

I have always liked the mantra: Be All You Can Be. It doesn’t mean you want to be the best or that you have to come first at whatever you do. It means that you are reaching your potential whenever and wherever you can by activating a growth mindset. It is vital that our learners see learning success through this frame. We cannot all be the smartest, we cannot all be first and we cannot all be the best. What we can be is the very best version of ‘me’.

Significantly, this attitude may be most important for those who are the smartest or best in their small sphere. If they are content to just be the best in a small pond then they are not reaching to be all they can be, nor are they reaching their absolute potential.

In class, there are some basic principles for students that can help them with a growth mindset. It includes recognising that:

1. We all have the right to be safe and able to learn at all times.
2. We have responsibilities that correspond with those rights. In particular, the need to maximise attendance and come organised with our laptop and other learning materials and a ‘ready to learn’ attitude.
3. Comparing yourself to someone else in your class is not as powerful as comparing yourself to your own development of knowledge and skills. The real question is: are you improving?

As our learners learn how to be the best version of themselves, they are sure to hit roadblocks and obstacles. Instead of getting discouraged, we need to redirect them and help them cultivate positive emotions like passion, curiosity and flexibility. Teaching them and ourselves for that matter to look at obstacles as opportunities instead of defeats. By staying positive, they will find creative solutions that would be missed if they had remained bogged down in self-defeating thoughts.

Our challenge as parents and teachers is to make sure each learner in our care does focus on being all they can be.  Whenever my nephews and nieces let me know they don’t need my help or advice, I think of the following quote from Anthony Hopkins, smile, and persist:

When I was a young guy, I knew everything. Now, I know very little. I know less and less as the time goes on.

Other matters:

• As we enter the shadows of Term 2, our students in Year Prep to 6 are encountering various forms of assessment. It is important to note that there is much less end of term, or end of semester, assessment as teachers are making ongoing judgements about student progress throughout this period of time. Assessment creates a powerful motivator for some students as well as an undue pressure for others. Where you have worries for your child at this time please encourage them to seek out their teachers for assistance or contact their teachers yourself, if necessary.
• There are to be no students on the school grounds before 8a.m. each morning unless they are attending a school organised activity or Before School Care. There is no supervision of students until 8:10a.m. and for their safety it is imperative that this is adhered to by all parents and caregivers.
• Year 1 will relocate to the following rooms as of Week 1, Term 3 in readiness for the new classrooms being built in Term 3: 1S - Room beside the Library; 1W - Drama/Music room; 1K - Top level beside Yr 5L.
• Tuckshop will be operating from the Mercy Centre from Week 10 Term 2.

GRANDPARENTS' DAY is back!

Week 3 next term is Catholic Education Week (CEW) and as we have done in the past (just not last year) we have a number of events planned for the week, however I thought it important to get the date out so that grandparents can be informed! On the Tuesday, July 27, we will start the day with a whole school Mass and then come back to school where the classrooms will be open until 12:30 for grandparents/ parents to spend some time and see first hand the great learning that is happening at SSPS.

The draft agenda is:

9:00am Mass at St Pat's Cathedral

10:00am  Back to school with classrooms open for visitors

10:45am  Morning Tea ( family groups can sit together for eating time)

11:15am  Classrooms continue open

12:30pm Open sessions conclude

TWO ASSEMBLIES THIS WEEK:

Tuesday @ 2:40pm: NAIDOC Assembly with assistance from and collaboration with the St Saviour's College Indigenous Dancers, ten of our own students will be performing an animal dance. We will also hear about the significance of NAIDOC Week 2021, the theme of which is 'Heal Country', calling for us all to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration and destruction.

Friday @ 8:45am: AWARDS Assembly at which will be presented

• Encouragement Awards
• Academic Awards will be presented to students during class time. This award is for any student who receives As, Bs and max of 1C across the 9 learning areas.

Parents are welcome to attend, but will need to check in if attending the Mass at the cathedral.

Please continue to keep our school community members in your prayers. Locally, we have staff and parents with ongoing physical and health issues. On a broader scale, we have heard of several of our families here at SSPS who have close relatives overseas (India, Philippines, Sudan etc) who have been ill, or even passed away from COVID with sometimes no members of the family able to be with them. We can all only try to imagine the stress, anguish and sadness that these circumstances would bring. So thank you for your ongoing prayers for our community.

And also, thank you to those who have donated the paper towels for ROSIES. We are blesssed to have such a supportive, generous community.

IGNITE LEARNING 

At St Saviour's Primary we want our learners to STRIVE at LEARNING and at LIFE and they can do that through the following learning dispositions:

For those of you have read my last three newsletter articles, I have written of some different ideas that you can try at home to promote the dispositions of being curious, determined and adventurous. This week, I would like to introduce the disposition of being collaborative.

Collaborative learners work well as part of a team.  They are inclined to listen carefully to others and build on their contributions.  They know there is a time to hold back and listen and not get carried away with their own contributions.  They know that learners that they do not often spend time with are often valuable people to collaborate with as they bring different perspectives to the conversation.  

At St Saviour's Primary School, collaborative and cooperative learning situations are becoming more and more frequent in the classrooms.  Learning in the real world can be a very social process, so children need to practise the skills of collaboration in a school environment.  

Some of these effective skills include; listening attentively and accurative to each other, speaking clearly and looking at others when talking, taking turns to talk, bulding on each others' contributions, knowing how to disagree respectfully, being kind and generous to those who are struggling and having the confidence to think aloud in the company of others.

At the same time, there are several advantages for learners when collaborative tasks are used in a classroom.  They include, but are not limited to; developing social skills, improving speaking and listening skills, creating class cohesion, supporting inclusion, the shifting of classroom ethos from competition to cooperation, deepening empathy for others, developing a growth mindset and sparking new friendships. 

If you are talking to your child about their day, why not ask if any collaborative learning happened at school today and discuss what they learned during this process.

St Saviour’s Primary Athletics Carnival 2021 

St Saviour’s Primary parents, teachers and students braved the cold weather for our annual athletics carnival and what a fantastic couple of days it was. Students dressed up in house colours competing against each other gaining points for their house. I was very proud to see so much determination and sportsmanship on the day. McAuley took out the relay trophy, with Xavier taking out the field event trophy and winning the athletics carnival shield beating Goretti by seven points. Below are all the results from the carnival. This week your child will bring a letter home if they have qualified for the Catholic or ZONE athletics carnivals. If your child does make the Catholic Carnival it does not guarantee they will make the ZONE carnival as the ZONE carnival does have qualifying ages, distances, heights and times.

Lost Property:

Please continue to check Lost Property before the end of term for any belongings or items that may have been misplaced over the Term. In particular jumpers, lunch boxes and water bottles.  Thank you.

School Improvement Survey:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

This year our school will be participating in a School Review and Improvement survey managed by Research Australia Development and Innovation Institute (RADII). As well as school staff and students from Years 5 - 12, all parents are invited to participate in the survey. The survey provides valuable feedback for the future directions of our school. It would be appreciated if parents could update their contact details prior 25 June 2021. This will ensure delivery to the correct parent email addresses are available.

On Monday 26 July 2021, RADII will send all parents a personalised invitation to complete the survey online. If both parents' email addresses are on file at the school, the invitation will be sent to both parents. However, the survey will close once the first person has completed it. If you do not wish to complete the survey, simply delete it. The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. You can complete the survey from anywhere you have access to the internet. The survey will close on Sunday, 08 August 2021. We encourage you to be very honest in your responses to the surveys. All responses go directly to RADII so they are confidential and anonymous. When the surveys are completed, and responses aggregated by RADII, overall data is sent to us so that we can then share the findings with you.

Report Cards:

Report Cards for Term 2 will be sent home tomorrow.  Please keep an eye out for this in your child's bag.

Crossing Supervisor - Farewell Mr Tony:

This week we farewelled one of our school crossing supervisors, Mr Tony Maunder.  Tony has worked at St Saviour's Primary for a number of years servicing the crossings for our school.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank Tony for his time at St Saviour's and for keeping all of us safe while using the school crossings.  We wish Tony all the best for the future.  

Week 8

During this week and next, students will have an opportunity to borrow library books for the holidays. Please share in the joy of reading with them over the term break. Students have also voted in the QLD children's choice book awards, the BILBY Awards. Students chose the notable book they have loved the best during the past 3 weeks, a great chance to think about the range of books and stories they have shared during library time and with their teachers.

Darling Downs Readers Cup Competition 

St Saviour's Primary School tied for 5th place!

Our team participated in this event with 18 other teams from across the Darling Downs on Tuesday 15th June. Team members Sean Darvall, Sho Doherty, Bianca Flanigan, Catherine Guy and Mikayla McLachlan answered 50 questions in total from 5 novels they have read across the last 10 weeks. This is no easy task and our students are to be commended for their determination and collaboration to prepare for and to participate in this reading competition. Special mention goes to Maya Smith and Olivia Dunlop who read alongside the final team and attended the morning tea discussions.

What a wonderful day last Friday as Prep celebrated their Alphabet Party.  

It takes a Spark! STEAM Symposium

This year’s STEAM showcase for boys was hosted by St Mary’s College. There were four hundred and twenty students at this year’s event. Personally, I really enjoyed this it as it provided a fun new learning opportunities for me to grow as a STEAM Engineer.

The first session of the day was one of the best because we got to host our MicroBit lesson that we have been preparing for at school during Science and our lunchtime STEM Club. There was a variety of schools at our MicroBit Mayhem session. I was in charge of two frustration tables. It was really fun teaching the students from other schools to code and play there finished games and we got some great feedback! The second session was good as well because Ethan, Jaymon, Kye and I all had “Battle Bots”, although it was not really about Battle Bots. This session was more about 3D printing and using TinkerCad to design. The last session was awesome as Carter, Aiden, Ethan, Jaymon and I all had “Automata.”,

One of my favourite parts of the day was listening to the two keynote speakers which really inspired me because they both told me about what they did as a child and how they became the people they are today. The first keynote speaker, Dr Derek Long was an agricultural engineer for USQ and he was really interesting. He told me what he does, how he does it and why he does it. The second keynote speaker, Professor Jonti Horner, an astrophysics for USQ, was my favourite out of the two as he talked about space and how many far planets he had helped discover. The best part about his speech was when he talked about how they discovered planets.

Finally, I would like to thank Ms Sleba for giving me an opportunity to go to this amazing event, it really made me think about what is waiting for me in the future. I can be anything I want to, it only takes a spark!

It Takes a Spark! EDU Conference

On Friday, 4th of June, ten girls from SSPS went to St saviours College for a STEM Symposium. We collaborated our skills about Microbits together to display our knowledge in three games; Shake the bottle, Zen and Frustration!

We also displayed our completed SWAY presentations from Science and English that showed how created the Frustration Games with Circuits, Batteries and Bulbs. We explained how to code and create these games as well as how to play them to 320 girls from other schools who were present at the Symposium. We also listened to a keynote speaker, her name was Megan Gilmour, she told us about her journey with STEM and how she never gave up on her journey to help sick kids learn and be part of their classrooms from their hospital beds.

An inspiring quote that she shared with us was “…courage before confidence.” Megan’s son having cancer when he was a primary school student sparked her in her STEM journey because he could not go to school, and she wanted to find a way using STEM to make it so that her son could go to participate in lessons and see his mates each day. After listening to Megan, we split up and four girls went to BattleBots with Mrs King and six girls went to Rocket science with Ms Harlen. Rocket Science was an interesting session, and the day overall was so much fun!

I want to thank all the students who came to display their knowledge in MicroBits, coding and STEM from SSPS, we all worked well together. The students who attended were Olivia, Sophie, Maya, Lydia, Harper, Miki, Catherine, Grace, Abby, and me (Emma).

Children will be asked to wear their PJ's to school and bring a gold coin donation to support children in foster care.
