PREP AFTERNOON TEA AND WELCOME BBQ:

Thanks to the P & F for organising the Welcome BBQ and Prep Afternoon Tea.  Special thanks to Mrs Biggar our Tuckshop Convenor for baking the afternoon tea delights for our Prep parents and children.  It went down like a treat!

The safety and wellbeing of our students is of the highest importance at St Saviour’s Primary School. St Saviour’s Primary School Outside School Hours Care (OSHC), Toowoomba

Last week parents were informed that as of Term 2, 2021 St Saviour's Primary School through Toowoomba Catholic Kindergarten and Care (TCKC) is excited to be applying for an Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) service here at St Saviour’s Primary School.  This will mean that outside school care will continue to be provided here at St Saviour's Primary from Term 2, 2021 under the Toowoomba Catholic Kindergarten and Care. 

Parents wanting to utilise this service must complete the enrolment process.

The proposed times will be:

Before School Care           6:30 to 8:30 am

After School Care             3:00p.m. to 6:00pm

Vacation Care                  6:30a.m. to 6:00pm

SCHOOL FEES 

Thank you to those who have enquired about Term 1 School Fee statements and to those who have already commenced payments for the year. Unfortunately, the fee statements which are normally issued by Week 2/3 of the term have been delayed due to the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office finance system upgrade. We are working with the TCS' School Accountant to issue these in the next few weeks.

Our Catholic Schools receive minimal Government funding so we are required to devise a school fee system that ensures we provide both the services and the resources necessary for the best possible education for your children.

The fees are spent in the following ways:

• Resources: Classroom and Curriculum resources including and not exclusive to sporting equipment, library books, musical instruments, interactive whiteboards, laptops and e -kindles.

• Wages: Secretaries, Teacher Aides, Relief Teachers, Cleaners and Groundsman.

• Purchasing, replacement and repairs of all school equipment - Information Technology, Furniture.

• Photocopying and printing - coloured paper, maintenance and copy costs, school stationery.

• Electricity, insurance, postage, phone, rates, excess water and general cleaning and maintenance expenses.

• Maintenance of buildings, ground improvements and Capital Development.

2022 PREP ENROLMENT 

It is time to commence the process for the enrolment of our Prep cohort for 2022. As always, we will begin with our siblings before we move forward to inviting new families to join our community.

Our school website is the pathway to the enrolment process which must be completed online.  

Children must be 5 by 30 June in the year they enrol (2022). I encourage you to attend to this process as soon as possible.  Our friendly office staff are always happy to support and answer any questions you may have regarding your child’s enrolment.

The school hosts a number of events throughout the year enabling families the opportunity to explore what St Saviour’s Primary School has to offer.  We have so much to offer our students and families that cannot be seen from driving past. 

Experience first-hand our holistic learning environment that drives academic achievement and a rich co-curricular program which ensures an engaging and balanced education.

As much as we love our facilities, it is our students and staff who make our school great. We hope you feel the warmth of our community when you visit. 

School tours are conducted during a normal school day to provide you and your family with a true sense of our St Saviour’s Primary community. All members of the family are welcome to attend.

Dear Parents and Carers,

First of all, thank you for the many messages of support that I have received with regards to our son, Hayden and his cancer treatment. At this stage he is going quite well however I will be heading back to Perth towards the end of the term, as the clinical trial, that he is particpiating in, moves to the next phase. Please keep him and his partner, Emily in your prayers.

Just a couple of updates for the start of the year.

SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM: The St Pat's Cathedral Parish program is underway now, with Cluster Groups beginning this weekend in preparation for 1st Reconciliation later this term. An email confirming current dates and times will be sent from the parish tomorrow, to those "on the list".

It is not too late to join, however we do need paperwork, particularly a copy of a Baptism Certificate to be received by the parish. 

If you have any queries or concerns, please contact either St Pat's Parish (46371500) or Paula Wagner or myself, via the school office.

PASTORAL CARE: At SSPS, we are very fortunate to have a wonderfully supportive parent body, some of whom have "put their hand up" or been "volunteered" to be a part of our Pastoral Care Team. We are always very happy to welcome newcomers to the team and have others help us out.

Basically, we are looking for ways to be of assistance, show support to our community, with an emphasis on making new parents feel welcome. Pre COVID, we would be having a "Welcome Cuppa" and a few other more social activities which we hope to fit into the calendar a little further down the track.

As we get 2021 underway, I am putting out a general request to any families who are in the position to be able to donate a gift card ( Coles, Woolies, local butcher, K Mart etc) that these would be very greatfully received. We could then distribute these via the school office as a need is identified. Thank you in anticipation of your ongoing support.

ASH WEDNESDAY: Lent begins next week, and Fr Michael is gathering with the Yrs 2-6 for a Liturgy at 9am in the Mercy Centre. Parents are welcome to attend, however, please note that ashes will not be individually distributed. Prep and Year 1 will have Fr Michael visit them too, later in the day.

Positive Education Enhanced Curriculum (PEEC)

Last newsletter I wrote about the Ignite Learning Project that is commencing at St Saviour's Primary School this year.  The focus of this project is learning.  Today, I would like to revisit the Positive Education Enhanced Curriculum (PEEC), where the focus is wellbeing.

At St Saviour's Primary, we strongly value both learning and student wellbeing. 

Positive Education brings together the science of Positive Psychology with best practice teaching to encourage and support individuals, schools and communities to flourish. Flourishing can be seen as a combination of ‘feeling good and doing good’.

Positive Education focuses on specific skills that assist students to strengthen their relationships, build positive emotions, enhance personal resilience, promote achievement and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

It’s important to note that Positive Education is not about being happy all the time and avoiding negative emotions. If you deeply care for anything or anyone, you will experience a range of emotions –this is part of living a rich, full and meaningful life.

Positive Education is also not about ensuring a child is free from failure and adversity. Instead, Positive Education seeks to prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child, equipping them for the journey ahead.

During their time at school, our students will learn the skills and knowledge involved in Positive Education during specific Positive Education classes. These concepts will also be lived through day-to-day school life.

For example, in specific Positive Education classes, students may:

•explore a range of relationship-building skills

•explore the responsibility and challenge of self-regulating their emotions

•be introduced to resilience skills which they can put into practice

•learn to understand and appreciate the benefits of expressing gratitude

•recognise and appreciate the unique strengths within themselves and those around them

•explore the relationship between service of others and having a meaningful life

WORLD OF MATHS

We are very excited to have World of Maths visiting St Saviour's Primary next week. 

World of Maths offer a hands on maths presentation of fun and educational, hands-on, problem solving activities. 

The activities or “displays” have been invented/designed and manufactured by World of Maths and therefore would not be found anywhere else in the world.

The program has been designed to cater for all abilities with 34 activities covering ages from 5 to 14 year old.

Parent Information Night

Thanks to all those parents who were able to make the Parent Information Night last night.  It was fantastic to see so many attend and we hope you gained some valuable insight into your child's learning at St Saviour's.

If you were unable to attend, the presentation will be sent home to all parents via Schoolzine in the coming days.  Please also keep an eye out for the leadership presentation which will also come home via Schoolzine.

Week 2

Next week, we celebrate how school libraries unlock the future during Queensland School Libraries Week. This annual event focuses on the role of libraries in the life and learning of Queensland students.

• Our library unlocks the future by offering a wide range of material and opportunities for student free choice reading. This is a proven, powerful contributor to literacy growth which is key to unlocking future learning, both academic and life learning.

• Our library unlocks the future by enabling access to reliable information and skill development to use information for a better, brighter informed future. 

QUEENSLAND SCHOOL LIBRARIES WEEK - ART COMPETITION 

Show us your ideas about school libraries unlocking the future as a piece of art or photography. All entries will be on display and one entry from each category will go into the state judging.

Prep - Year 2:  Draw or paint your favourite book character in a setting that shows how you imagine the future might look. Your picture should be on an A4 sheet. 

Year 3 - Year 6:  Take a photo or produce an artwork inspired by the theme: School Libraries - Unlocking the Future.  

Bring your finished artwork or photo to the library no later than  

Monday 15th February for us all to enjoy.

Lunch-time Activities 

Tuesday and Wednesday lunch-time activities are well underway. Students are invited to read, draw, create, play board games and complete puzzles between   1.00pm – 1.20pm on these days.

Below is a shortened list taken from Primary English Teaching Association Australia (Petaa) of some tips to help support your child when reading at home. For the full list head to Parents guide to reading and writing at home (petaa.edu.au)

• Establish a home reading routine. Read aloud with your children everyday. Ten minutes for each child around a book of his/her choice. If English is your second language, read in your home language. If you lack confidence in reading aloud, the fact that you are reading with your child is what matters. Talk about the illustrations and contribute where you can. Share your excitement for reading and this will be the model your child will adopt.
• The reader holds the book! There is a lot of power and control in the world of reading. The reader needs to have the power.
• During home reading time, turn off electronic devices and give each child ten minutes of your undivided attention.
• Before you read a book, set your child up for success. Reading is not a test! Reading time is only ten minutes so do some of the following: Keep the introduction short – one minute is enough. Talk about the illustrations and the title. Read the blurb and talk about the author, talk about any unusual words, read a page here and there as your child flicks through the book, discuss the characters. This is a short introduction, not an interrogation. If the book is already a familiar one, then this step is unnecessary.
• If reading time is stressful, move the reading to a new location. Instead of sitting at the kitchen bench, move to the lounge room floor, or go outside and sit under a tree or take the books to the local coffee shop.
• At the end of the 10 minutes, ask questions that encourage discussion, for example: What was your favourite part? Tell me about the characters. What do you think will happen next? What did you think about that setting? What do like/ dislike about this book? There is no need to interrogate the reader. Make it a conversation as you would in a book club.
• Avoid judging your child’s reading with words such as: ‘good’, ‘excellent’ or ‘getting better’. Instead say things about the strategies your child uses when reading such as: ‘I like how you read on when you came to that difficult word.’ ‘I like how you changed your voice to be the voice of the character in the story’. ‘I noticed that you reread the bit that did not make sense.’

St Saviour's Primary Swimming Carnival 2021 

St Saviour’s Primary Swimming Carnival was held on the 2nd of February at Glennie Aquatic Centre. Students from Year Three to Six were involved in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly in both 50m and 25m events. The carnival concluded with a Year Six relay involving the four houses. All students put in a mammoth effort in both the swimming and the cheering on the day. It was a tough competition but Goretti was the overall winning house also winning the relay. Age champions for the day are listed below.  

• 9-year-old girls – Lily Brookman, Amelia Ellis (Runner-up), Akeer Adol (Runner-up) 
• 10-year-old girls – Mia Casagrande, Sophia Hooper (Runner-up) 
• 11-year-old girls – Emma Barram, Erin Ward (Runner-up)

• 9-year-old boys – Cooper Dunlop, Hugo Watson (Runner-up)

Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival 

On Wednesday the 10th of February 2020, St Saviour’s students competed in the Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival at Glennie Aquatic Centre. These students are to be commended for the way they represented their school in swimming and behaviour on the day. Students swam their hearts out and many students placed in the top four in their heats and relays.  Some of these students have been selected to participate in the Central Zone Swimming Carnival to be held on Wednesday 17th February.  

FREE Afterschool AFL Sessions (Prep – Year 3) 

AFL Queensland has been organised through sporting schools to deliver AFL sessions on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15pm – 4:00pm from the 17th of February 2021 to the 10th of March 2021 (four weeks). There are only 30 spots available for this opportunity for your child to come and try AFL in a fun and safe environment. The first 30 parents to email me will secure the spots for this afternoon activity. Please email brendan.luck@twb.catholic.edu.au. Please note that no teacher will be at these sessions and they will be run by a representative from AFL Queensland. 

FREE Afterschool Hockey Sessions (Year 3 – 6) 

Hockey Queensland has been organised through sporting schools to deliver Hockey sessions on Tuesday afternoons from 3:15pm – 4:15pm from the 16th of February 2021 to the 9th of March 2021 (four weeks). There are only 18 spots available for this opportunity for your child to come and try Hockey in a fun and safe environment. The first 18 parents to email me will secure the spots for this afternoon activity. Please email brendan.luck@twb.catholic.edu.au. Please note that no teacher will be at these sessions and they will be run by a representative from Hockey Queensland. 

Fitness Club 

Fitness Club kicked off on Tuesday the 9th of February with over 50 students attending. Fitness Club is designed to improve students' fitness levels for the school Cross Country in Week Ten. It will run every Tuesday and Thursday until Thursday 25th March 2021. Fitness Club is for students in Year Three to six. Mr Luck, Mrs Wagner, Mrs McHugh and Mr Hannant will be running these sessions. Please make sure your child is on time if they wish to attend, as the sessions start with stretching and a warmup which need to be completed before participating. If your child would like to attend, please make sure they have completed a permission slip which is available at the office. If you have any questions, please email Mr Luck via brendan.luck@twb.catholic.edu.au. 

Zone and Darling Downs Trials 

All Zone and Darling Downs trials will be placed on Schoolzine. Please check Schoolzine regularly or set up notifications on your phone if you wish for your child to be eligible to trial for Zone and Darling Downs sporting teams as you will be required to obtain paperwork from me. Welcome to all families, whether you are returning or whether you are new to our wonderful school.  Learning support is a highly valued and integral part of St Saviour’s Primary School. All teachers in catholic schools are committed to ensuring all students experience academic success and achieve their best. We believe that every child can learn and the needs of every child are important. One way that St Saviour’s Primary School personalises all student learning is by optimising the support of the Learning Support Program led by myself.

The triangle below demonstrates how student learning is organised.  

Many specialists support the learning process at St Saviour’s Primary. Staff have access to a Speech Pathologist, an Occupational Therapist, specialist teachers and our School Counsellor, Ms Anne Woodcroft-Brown, to support teachers to ensure they use the best methods to maximise all student learning. School structures and processes assist in designing, planning and organising classroom learning to match your child’s learning. 

You, as parents, are key contributors to your child’s learning and your input is welcome.  If you wish any further information regarding Learning Support at our school, please do not hesitate to contact me through the office.

School Photo Day:

School Photo Day is MONDAY 22nd February.  Envelopes have been sent home last week.  Instructions on how to order your child's photos are on the front of the envelope.  Online ordering is preferred.  This year our Photographers are MSP Photography. MSP took our school photos last year and are very experienced and professional.  We look forward to school photo day for 2021.

Families wishing to have sibling photos will need to collect a Sibling Photo Envelope from the office to fill in and return before photo day.

Crossing Supervisor:

St Saviour's Primary welcomes our new crossing supervisor Janette McGillivray.  Janette will be working on both Lawrence Street and Perth Street crossings.  Welcome to St Saviour's Janette.

Parking:

Parents please do not park in Bus Zones and No Standing Zones around our school at drop off and pick up.  Police are monitoring school zones regularly and our school is one of them.  You will receive an infringement notice if you continue to do this.

Year 6 Leadership Shirts:

Congratulations to our Year 6 Leaders who were presented with their Leadership Shirts at Assembly on Monday. They were very excited to receive them.  Well done Year 6.

St Saviour's FACE/ P&F would like to thank everyone who attended the Welcome Prep Afternoon Tea and the Welcome bbq. It was great to mingle and meet new families. We would like to thank all who volunteered and the staff that helped on the day. Thanks to Tash in the tuckshop for the yummy afternoon tea she provided for the preppies. Thank you everyone for an enjoyable event.

The AGM will be held on Tuesday the 16th of February at 6:00pm in the library.  All positions are open and have to be filled. Sushi availability

Apologies to those parents who tried to order sushi last week and it was unavailable for ordering.  I misjudged the support for it.   I have ordered quite a bit more this week.  Please try and order on a Thursday to ensure you get your preferred flavour.  I have to order the rolls on a Thursday without knowing exactly how many will be ordered, so first in best dressed!
