Week 5, Term 3 2020
Dear Parents, Staff and Students
This week I have gathered with my Principal colleagues and members of the TCSO Leadership team in the far west town of Quilpie with a population of 853 within the town and shire. The theme of our Leadership Forum focused on ‘Schools that deliver’ which led to strategic planning sessions, TCSO Directorate updates and initiatives in the areas of Faith and Identity, Teaching and Learning, Information Services, Human Resources and Finance for 2021. Believe me there was no time to relax throughout the workday, however, by night the locals certainly embraced us with a warm welcome and true outback hospitality was extended to us all. The openness and genuine appreciation of our visit was evident each time a friendly local shared their knowledge and story of their beloved town Quilpie.
We were fortunate to experience a private viewing of Eagle Gallery with resident artist Lyn Barnes, which was certainly a highlight for me as an amateur artist! Today we ventured to Baldy Top Lookout utilizing the Quilpie environment as our learning place to engage in spiritual formation as Leaders of Catholic Schools within the Toowoomba Diocese. The panoramic views took my breath away. Another highlight of the week was getting to learn about the dinosaurs discovered in the Eromanga Area. Was so incredible to hold ‘Tom’ the dinosaur toe which is 90 -95 million years old which took up to a year to excavate and weighed 4kgs. Very keen to look into the possibilities of changing our Year 5 and 6 camps in the future to an outback camp rather than the beach.
A great week of thinking and learning and a little bit of fun was had by all. Thank you again, St Finbarr’s, and the Quilpie community for your extensive hospitality and warm welcome. Hope to visit again soon.

Mrs Judy Smith will be taking long service leave for the last three weeks of Term 3. In her absence Mrs Paula Wagner (Year 5W) teacher will take up Judy's role as Assistant Principal Religious Education and Intervention teacher for the younger grades in the last two weeks of term once she returns from Year 5 Camp. Paula is certainly keen and looking forward to the challenge of leadership. We wish Judy all the best for a well earned rest and hopefully she is able to travel safely to catch up with friends and family at this time. During this time Year 5W will be taught by Cate Bell. Cate is known to the students and is familiar with the Year 5 curriculum and the school processes.
Miss Luci Adams will also be utilising long service leave beginning in Week 9, Term 3 (7th September - 9th October and returning Week 2, Term 4. In her absence, Mrs Kate Everlyn who is one of our competent relief teachers who is very familiar with the SSPS processes and happenings of our school. Kate has worked within the Prep A classroom and will meet with Luci in the coming weeks to ensure the children's learning opportunities will progress in her absence.
Miss Lisa Kynoch will be attending a Toowoomba Catholic Schools Staff Retreat in the last week of Term 3 and Mrs Siobhan Grundon will teach Year 5K during this time. We wish Lisa a worthy and restful retreat.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
Reporting on student progress takes place officially four times a year. Terms 1 and 3 are parent/teacher interviews and terms 2 and 4 are report cards.
Parent/teacher interviews for Term 3 will take place for the majority of classes in weeks 9 and 10. Due to camp, retreats and other commitments, Prep A, 5W, 5K and 5C will host their interviews in Weeks 8 and 9. A full list of times and dates will be made available via Schoolzine early next week (Week 6).
All parents are encouraged to attend an interview or talk to their child's teacher. Interviews will be offered over the phone, via Microsoft TEAMS or in person. Please select your favoured format when booking your interview.

Congratulations to Evie King who has been selected in the Darling Downs Softball Team. She will travel to Redcliffe later in the year. Well done Evie.
Year 6 Sport Shirts
Dan Eagleson has informed me that he has some extra 2020 Year 6 leader shirts. If your child has grown out of theirs or would like another one, please stop into the uniform shop to purchase a shirt.
Year 5 Camp
Further information, including permission forms, have been sent regarding Year 5 Camp. This camp will take place in Week 9 of this term. Please check Caremonkey for further information. It would be appreciated if these forms could be returned to classroom teachers as soon as possible.
Dear Parents and Carers,
It is amazing to think that we are already half way through the term, with hopefully, the worst of the wintery weather behind us. We have seen a bit more sickness/ absentees over the last couple of weeks, within both students and staff so we are constantly reminding everyone to wash hands and sanitise as often as possible. The aim of course is to try and keep everyone well. Thank you parents for being so pro-active in keeping your "littlies" at home even if they have just a cold. You are truly looking out for all of us.
Mrs Melinda Harkins has found an extreme way to stay indoors!! She is currently recovering from surgery to reconnect the bones in her right wrist after taking a tumble while riding in Brisbane on the weekend. At this stage she will be away from school for at least the next two weeks and then will require ongoing physiotherapy. No doubt we will hear some great stories of her "hospital adventures" however we are all saying prayers for a swift recovery and hope to see her back at school soon, but hopefully NOT back on her bike.
Finalists in CEW Excellence Awards: We are delighted to share the news that THREE of our staff members have been named as finalists in the TCSO Excellence Awards. Congrataulations to:

Kristi-Lee Hall (School Cleaner) a finalist in the Volunteer section
Anne Woodcroft-Brown (School Counsellor) a finalist in the Education Support section
We won't know the final winners of these awards until October however, whether they get an award or not, we are very proud of these three ladies who all go above and beyond what is expected in their role. Monica, Kristi-Lee and Anne, SSPS is privileged to have you as part of our community. You are all winners!!
St Vincent De Paul Appeal: Again, thank you to all our very generous, thoughtful families who rallied to the request we shared with you from the St V De Paul store across the road. All sorts of donations came through from all across the school. Julie Inskip attended our assembly last week and made the students aware of the great need there is in our community, to look after those who need some assistance.

Our mighty sprinters - congratulations to everyone who ran so well and gave your best.
Over the four weeks of the athletics carnival, students gained points for their houses by participating in different events. On Tuesday of Week Three and Four, all grades competed in relays, ball games and sprints. All students did a fantastic job and so much fun was had. All points were calculated and Coolock was the winner of the ball games and McAuley won the relays. The most points scored in the field events was by Goretti who was also the overall winner of the St Saviour’s Primary Athletics for 2020. I want to say a big thank you to our Year Six leaders who showed great leadership for the duration of the carnival.

FREE Afterschool NRL Sessions (Year 3 – Year 6)
NRL has been organised through Sporting Schools to deliver NRL sessions on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15pm – 4:15pm from the 19th of August 2020 to the 9th of September 2020 (four weeks). There are only 30 spots available for this opportunity for your child to come and try NRL in a fun and safe environment. Please note that no teacher will be at these sessions and they will be run by a representative from NRL.

Next week is Wellbeing Week at St Saviour’s Primary. Wellbeing Week is an opportunity for us, as a community, to re-connect with all that makes us feel good. In line with our exploration into Positive Education, this Term’s Wellbeing Week will focus on the pillar of “Positive Engagement”. This domain helps students and staff to experience complete immersion in activities through understanding the nature of engagement, the pathways to it, and the impact it has on individual wellbeing. Engaged individuals are curious, interested, motivated, and persistent in the face of challenges. Engaged individuals also report higher self-esteem, optimism and lower pessimism.
Next week our staff and students will be completing a variety of mindfulness activities and brain breaks to help enhance positive engagement in all aspects of our school life. Studies over the last 20 years have shown promising results, suggesting brain breaks and mindfulness have multiple benefits for student learning. These benefits include improved cognitive functioning, increased motivation, improved attention, promotion of pro-social behaviour, reduced anxiety/stress, and enhanced ability to sustain focus for academic work. By providing students with a social and fun break in a lesson, there is an increased opportunity and a new context for strengthening student-student and teacher-student relationships. Brain breaks alter the classroom climate by introducing a new collective action. Such activities have been shown to increase students’ positive emotions and enjoyment within the classroom.

Term 3 School Fees are due next Friday 21st August 2020. Thank you to those families who have finalised their Term 3 school fees.
Year 5 Camp Payments:
Yea 5 Camp payments are due by Friday 28th August 2020.
Prep Drop Off:
It has come to our attention that parents are stopping in the middle of the Prep driveway of a morning to drop children off to Prep. This is unacceptable. For the safety of our Prep children and families, parents please take the time to drive around and find a park. We understand drop off times are busy and parents do need to get to work, but safety is our number one priority in and around our school. We thank you for your understanding.
Prep Enrolments 2022:
St Saviour's Primary is now taking enrolments for Prep 2022. Applications are available to download off the website.
Pupil Free Day:
The next Pupil Free Day for Term 3 is FRIDAY 4th SEPTEMBER.
Lost Property:
Parents please continue to check your child is wearing their correct uniform items, including hats, jumpers and spray jackets.
Tuckshop Orders:
Parents please remember to finalise all outstanding Tuckshop invoices by the end of next week. We have a large amount of families who owe the Tuckshop money.
Assembly:
Assembly is held every Monday afternoon from 2.30pm. Families are welcome to attend. We ask that you sign in to the Mercy Centre upon arrival and adhere to the social distancing rules that are in place.

Renee Campbell role: Secretary
Renee has one daughter, Thea in Prep H. Renee also has another daughter Faye who is 3 years old.
Q1. What interested you in becoming involved with SSPS school parents?
I decided to become a member so I could help and get an informed understanding of the school community I was a part of.
Q2. What are your favourite foods?
Ice cream, chocolate and Danish pastries.
Q3. What are your interest and hobbies?
I'm going to sound like an old lady but, I enjoy cooking, camping, sewing, knitting and gardening.
Q4. What are your goals and expectations?
To help improve, grow and enjoy the experience in contributing to the school.
Q5. What is your favourite sport?
I'm not really interested in watching sport. I did enjoy playing soccer as a kid.
Q6. What are you most scared of?
I'm scared of spiders, although I'm getting pretty good at holding my composure in front of my girls.
Q7. What would you do if you won $1,000,000?
The normal sensible stuff, pay off the mortgage, buy a property and turn it into a hobby farm and take a few holidays.

The ST SAVIOUR'S PRIMARY SCHOOL Pie Drive fundraiser is now open for orders. Please support our fundraiser to help raise much needed funds. These funds will be going towards upgrading fencing and seating along Ruthven Street and playground areas.
