Term 2, Week 10, 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
How lucky are we to be a part of such a wonderful community at St Saviour's Primary School?
The school athletics carnival on Friday of last week was a perfect example of 'community'. It was evident that SSPS students are very connected to their school and, in particular, their sport house. The participation and determination in events (even when it was hard) to gain points for their house was notable, as was the cheering that occurred during every single event on the day. The sportsmanship and comradery was exceptional.
Not to be outdone, the parents who came to support their child/ren showed terrific spirit. Last newsletter, I wrote about parent engagement verses parent involvement. The involvement of parents on this day was truly special. A mention to Renee Kilpatrick and the parents who assisted on the BBQ to raise funds for the Parent Engagement Network, as well as those parents who came out injury free after competing in the Year 6 relay. Also to Mr Warren, our school groundsman, who worked extra hours to transport the BBQ, bins and other items, whilst also finding the time to turn a few sausages on the day.
Finally, to the staff of St Saviour's Primary School whose dedication on the day and support of each and every child is truly appreciated. From Mr Luck who set up with the assistance of his car headlights, to the teachers and school officers who looked after our youngest students during the rotations or were an official at an event; your collaboration and determination was evident.
Of course, whilst all of the above was evident on Friday, the sense of 'community' at St Saviour's Primary is always there. It is always valued. It is very much appreciated.
I hope your children enjoy their well deserved holiday. I will see you all back at school in Term 3.

Holidays are upon us, and it is a great time to reflect upon the year so far and think about all that has been achieved. With our mission of striving in faith, learning and life it is clear to see how we enacted that this semester.
Striving in Faith
With our Mercy Values of Compassion, Excellence and Service to guide us this semester, striving in faith has been a part of the fabric of our day-to-day school life. Some of the ways we have lived our faith include visits to Brodribb Nursing Home, organising the Biggest Morning Tea for Cancer, donating to our St Vincent DePaul Winter Appeal, students being initiated into the Catholic faith through Baptism and confirming that faith with Confirmation and First Communion and experiencing moments of prayer and ritual as a whole school.
Striving in Learning
Visible evidence of how we strive to be a community with learning at its heart was evident with the academic acknowledgements given this week. We congratulated students for not just their achievement, but also their commitment to progress. Pheonix awards were awarded to students who made significant progress in one or more learning areas across the semester. Academic Achievement Awards were awarded for application and achieving high academic results across all learning areas throughout the semester. Academic Medals were awarded to two students this semester who achieved academic excellence with an A result in all subject areas. Congratulations to Randuli Wijayaratne in 3K and Aya Doherty in 6L.
Striving in Life
Finally, we have been very busy being a community who look for opportunities to flourish in life. Students have been involved and ably led by staff in Stem club, Fitness club and Choir this semester. Students have had the opportunity to participate in the Darling Downs Science and Engineering Discovery Day at UniSQ, Interschool Chess tournaments, Maths team challenge, Drama Festival and Sing Out. Students have shown great sportsmanship, determination and participation in all three school sport carnivals, swimming, cross-country and athletics. We have come together as a community multiple times to celebrate our children and events in school life such as the welcome BBQ and disco, Mother’s Day and ANZAC day.
What a great first term of 2024! Best wishes to all students and their families for a safe and relaxing break from school. Hopefully the break will provide us all with a chance to recharge and refresh ready for Semester Two!

….experiencing FAITH in the Mercy Tradition
Dear families
Congratulations to a number of Yr 4 students, along with Ella in Yr 3B (in Sacred Heart Parish), who took part and have completed the St Patrick’s Cathedral Sacramental program by receiving First Eucharist last weekend. I wanted to share a little of Fr Michael’s reflection from his own faith journey after receiving the sacraments. I think he describes it perfectly….., “To be able to fully participate in Mass each time, gave me a great sense of a shared journey of faith that we are all on. It gave me a new assurance of God’s presence through prayer and the strength to walk with confidence, especially later when my Grandmother died. I could pray for her and it opened me to an experience of God being near to guide my pathway. We are called to encourage and nurture the spiritual life of our young people, as much as we nurture their health and wellbeing. Faith is an important component and contributor of growth and goes a long way to developing an understanding of our relationship with the world around us, and with God’s help to find the wisdom to make it a better place.” I couldn’t agree more.
Term 2 Awards assembly – Congratulations to those students who were acknowledge for their efforts in showing our Mercy values in Term 2 and Academic progress this semester. You should be very proud of yourselves. Keep up the wonderful effort!
Leading into the school holidays, it is a timely reminder of the importance of safe online behaviours for our students. Generally, when the weather turns cold and we’re indoors, the amount of screen time we access increases (adults included!)
Some resources available include the Daniel Morcombe program and the Real Talk program provided by TCSO. Teachers will be reminding students as to who our Student protection officers are here at St Saviour’s and highlighting the importance of safe behaviours, particularly online. There are a number of parent resources which you can access at home to help support you with these discussions.
https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents
A very user friendly resource is the eSafety Guide – Want to know more about the latest apps, games and social media that your child is using? The eSafety Guide includes important advice about their safety features, including how to use the settings to report online abuse and protect personal information.

Dear Parents,
It has been an absolute pleasure this semester to teach the whole school in their weekly drama lessons and witness students flourish in their ability to perform and be confident in using their voice. In the last two weeks, students performed on the stage for their assessment, with some students being successful in making it to the semi-finals of our Drama Festival and this week to the Grand Final. During our performances for Drama Festival, all students worked on incorporating many skills such as voice projection, articulation, connecting movement to voice and engaging the audience in their performance. Drama is such an important skill for all students, and it has been truly amazing to see all students feeling safe in the drama space and be willing to have a go up on stage, right from Prep to Grade 6.
Our Prep students had their first performance on stage and loved every minute. Their enthusiasm was contagious and their were some strong performers in the group who will do well next year in their individual poems.
Congratulations to the following students who made it to the Grand final and received a medal for their performance:

PE (P-2) Term Two
Students in Prep to Year Two completed a modified Athletics unit in the lead up to the school athletics carnival. They focused on modified shotput, discus and high jump as well as sprints, relays and ball games. Students also engaged in station activities where six stations are set up and they rotate between them throughout the lesson. These activities involve passing, catching, kicking, dribbling with feet, hands and hockey sticks, shooting hoops, scooter boards, skipping, goal shooting, ups and downs with tennis rachets, hopping, jumping, skipping, side stepping, animal crawling and balancing.
PE (3-6) Term Two
In Term Two, students have been participating in Athletics, learning how to execute Shot Put, Discus, High Jump, Long Jump, Sprints, Relays and Ball Games. The skills the students have acquired will been utilised in the school athletics carnival.
Health (Prep – Year 2) Term Two
In Term Two, Prep, Year One and Year Two students engaged in health lessons on Wednesdays. Prep students learnt about how their body parts work to help them move, what happens as they grow and how to look after their body by living a healthy and active lifestyle. Year One focused on changes when they grow, what has changed since they were a baby, looking at difference and their identity, and how to live an active and healthy life. The learning focus for Year Two was a more in-depth insight into healthy eating, steps to increase physical activity at home and in the playground at school, keeping a healthy and safe classroom and how we can include others.
Basketball Star
Congratulations to Kenn Corpuz who participated in the Toowoomba Mountaineers U12 trials in May. Kenn found out this week that he made the U12 Toowoomba Neers team after attending a grading tournament over the weekend for the SQJBC held on the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
Zone and Darling Downs Trials
All Zone and Darling Downs trials will be placed on Parent Portal. Please check Parent Portal regularly or set up notifications on your phone if you wish for your child to be eligible to trial for Zone and Darling Downs sporting teams as you will be required to obtain paperwork from myself. I am unable to nominate students after the closing date so please make sure you do keep an eye on Parent Portal. Any questions, please contact me at brendan.luck@twb.catholic.edu.au.

Darling Downs Readers’ Cup Competition
Our team, Maya Adams, Estelle Harlen, Gorgi Saad and Georgina Sullivan performed very well at this regional competition hosted by Highlands College. The team placed 5th out of 31 teams! They are to be congratulated for reading the 5 set novels and remembering enough detail in each story to answer the 50 questions asked on the day. Special thanks to Mr Adams and Mrs Sullivan for providing transport to and from the event.
Family Book Club
Our Term 2 chat over afternoon tea last Wednesday was lively. After considering some of the new books available in the library, we chose The Lost Library by Rebecca Stead and Wendy Mass for our Term 3 read.
A little free library guarded by a cat and a boy who takes on the mystery it keeps. Read more here; The Lost Library by Rebecca Stead | Goodreads
We would love more families to join us! Please consider getting your family a copy of The Lost Library ($12.00 online at Big W books or Amazon), reading together and coming along to our chat which will be held after school in Week 8 next term.
Overdue Items
Thanks for supporting your students to find and return overdue items. Following our policy, any unreturned items from Term 1 2024 will be invoiced early in Term 3.
Holiday Reading
Students have all had an opportunity to borrow library books for the holidays so please encourage them to read during the break.
Access to stories, information and online books is available from our AccessIT homepage here St Saviours Primary School Toowoomba (accessit.online)
End of Term Thanks
Enjoy the Winter break,
Anne Anderson
Teacher Librarian
Constance Bailey, our school wellbeing officer, has decided to finish up at the end of this term. Constance looks forward to spending more time with her two young children. She has performed admirably in this role over the first six months of the school year and I thank her for her dedication to all students at St Saviour's Primary.
A recruitment process is currently underway to replace Constance for the second half of 2024.
Thanks for your work at SSPS, Constance.
Secondly, Kathryn Stewart has also resigned from her position as music teacher at St Saviour's Primary School. I thank Kathryn for sharing her musical talents with our children during her time here.
I am hopeful that a recruitment process will take place over the upcoming holidays with advertising likely to happen early next week.
All the best for the future Kathryn!
Our Prep boys and girls started week 9 in style, testing out the new equipment in our purpose-built playground area. They can enjoy plenty of play options to swing, climb, slide, run around and test out the water pump!
Thanks to all of the families who are using the Stop/Drop/Go in the mornings and afternoon. Please see a few reminders below:
- Proceed forward using the left lane only;
- Before entering the facility, do not queue across the crossing on Lawrence Street or Neil Street;
- Children will be loaded in the first 2-4 spaces to make for more efficient use
- In the afternoon, there is generally someone in control of the zebra crossing before the pick up point. Normally, cars will be asked to move before pedestrians;
- When exiting the facility, please only turn left onto Lawrence Street as directed; and
- Car parks within the facility are for boarding house staff only - please do not park here to pick up your child/ren.
TERM 3, 2024
A reminder to all families that Term 3 will begin on Tuesday, 9 July 2024. No school on the Monday!
SCHOOL UNIFORM SHOP - Holiday Hours
Please note the School Locker Uniform Shop will be open on Thursday 4 July between 2pm and 430pm. This is the only holiday availability if you require uniform items.
GARDEN CITY MOSQUE OPEN DAY
As the holidays are about to commence, I am aware that some of you will be shoe shopping. Currently, the uniform protocols state predominately white sports shoes must be worn (as below).
From Term 3, children are able to wear predominately white sport shoes or a black sport shoe. Below you can see some of the option that are fine for the children to wear. The main reason for this decision is that white sport shoes can be hard to find and also get very dirty in Toowoomba with the red dirt. If black shoes don't appeal to your child, please select shoes that have some colour, however they cannot be multicoloured or extremely bright.
Thanks for your understanding and consideration when purchasing sport shoes.
