Week 1, Term 1 2022

Welcome to all new families and welcome back to those who are returning.

It is stating the obvious that this is not how we expected the school year to begin. However, I am grateful for how well the community has adapted to the changes and challenges of this interrupted commencement. Our learners across all year levels have been engaged and cooperative and the feedback, thus far, has been overwhelmingly positive. I want to congratulate all the new Preps, who have coped so well with the disrupted start. Overall, it has been a very promising sign for the year ahead.

I do wish to acknowledge the teaching and support staff for what they have done over the past fortnight that has enabled such a smooth transition for all.  They have spent time planning and preparing lessons, completing mandated student protection, code of conduct, health and safety and first aid training over the past two weeks.  The plans that they had in place have had to change and change quickly. The innovative work of teachers in preparing and adapting the curriculum means that we return to school this week with some momentum.

In welcoming everyone back to school, it is important to draw your attention to the following matters. We return to school while the wider community is learning to live with COVID-19. This means we have to operate school as normal in some regards while also managing the likely presence of the virus in the school. In this context, we are focused on keeping students and staff healthy while also mitigating the risk of further infection.

The fundamental step in this regard is to be clear about our processes and protocols in the Health Management of our community.

In essence:

• If your child shows signs of illness before school, do not send them to school. Have them tested and communicate positive results to the school.
• If your child shows signs of illness at school, they must report to their class teacher and we will contact you immediately to take them home and to be tested. Again, please communicate positive results to the school.
• If your child is deemed to be a close contact, do not send them to school but please communicate this to the school.

It is clear to us that numerous students will fall ill, as will staff, in the coming weeks. Consequently, we anticipate disruption throughout the first term.

As a school community we have all done so well to support each other with Covid restrictions and requirements to date. The beginning of this year has been no different.

We continue to promote our mission of welcoming all.

We encourage our students to acknowledge and accept diverse perspectives so we can all belong and feel safe at school.

The current circumstances with people making decisions and choices about how they are managing Covid-19 and preventative measures for themselves and their family creates an opportunity for us to model and teach our children what being inclusive looks and sounds like.

Please help us to support this inclusive learning environment for all children by having conversations with your child about accepting people will make different choices about how they are responding to Covid. For example some students will wear masks and some won’t.

These conversations might also include acknowledging every individual has different needs, which may not always be obvious.

Remember to have regular check in chats with your child and to remind them of who they can talk to at home or at school if they have overwhelming feelings.

As we navigate the challenges going forward thank you for creating a culture where we support other’s choices.

Staffing Updates:

We are very excited for  Mss Natalie Lancuba and her husband Mitch, who are looking forward to the birth of their first baby next term.  Ms Lancuba, one of our Year 5 teachers, will be taking parental leave from Term 2 onwards. This position will be advertised shortly, following the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Recruitment procedure. Once the procedure is complete, the successful applicant will be announced to our community. 

In conclusion, over recent weeks there has been extensive planning from the School Leadership Team for the term ahead during what is likely to be a time of considerable uncertainty. I am grateful for these efforts and their commitment to looking after the health and safety of the school community.

Whatever lies ahead, as we set out on the journey of the 2022 school year, we do so as a Catholic school in the Sisters of Mercy tradition. Part of that tradition is to know the value of prayer at all times in our lives, not just in times of uncertainty. But at this time, our collective prayer is to remain a hope-filled community that places our humble needs in the hands of God.

Congratulations to our two new Year 6 students, Maddison and Nimar who received their Leadership Badges this week.

Such excitment each day, as I walk the building site and see the classrooms coming to life and nearly fully complete for our Year 1 students and The ARTS room.

Work has progressed significantly on the ground floor teaching spaces, with painting and floor coverings completed, with electrical fit off, testing and commissioning to be completed this week. Electrical/Mechanical Engineers were on site yesterday doing their inspection.

 Joinery installation is planned for the remainder of this week. Minor touch-up painting and sealing to be done early next week. The completion of the external works, landscaping etc is ongoing.

Anticipated occupation is in sight so that the teaching and learning can commence in these spaces from Monday 21 February 2022.

Work continues on Administration with all plastering and glazing complete. Wall and floor tiling has commenced and toilet partition walls and doors  are in. Floor prep is to commence next week, along with painting. Expected practical completion for this portion is March 2022. I will continue to keep you updated.  In the meantime enjoy the photo montage.

A sincere "Welcome" to everyone, especially those families who are new to our community. I hope that whatever comes your way in 2022, that you will find encouragement, support and a listening ear, here at St Saviour's Primary School. We have had to postpone our Opening School Mass for the time being, with year level classes now holding their own Welcome Liturgy, just with the students. 

The St Pat's Cathedral Parish Sacramental Program will still take place this semester, though in a modified format. Enrolment Forms are due back now, for anyone wanting to take part, with resources to be sent home next week. Please contact me via the school office, if you need a form sent home.

SAFE TRAVELS ROYA

We take this opportunity to wish our ICT Support Officer, Roya Esmaeilani, a wonderful trip home to Iran where she will spend time with her beloved family whom she hasn't seen for five years. Roya will be head to Isfahan, the largest city outside Tehran for 4 weeks, before bringing her parents out to stay with her and her husband, here in Toowoomba.

In Roya's absence, Mr Sam Hayes will be looking after our IT needs, after spending time here this Friday with Roya. Sam comes to us having already worked within the TCS system. 

UNIFORM REMINDERS:

Thank you to all parents/ carers for your efforts with regards to outfitting your child/ren for the start of the new year. It has been wonderful to see the shiny new shoes, smart haircuts and pristine new uniforms. Just a reminder that:

• Yrs 1-6 students must have a formal hat (sports hat is optional) 
• SSPS sports socks are required as part of the sports uniform
• No nail polish or excess jewelery 
• Earrings: Plain sleepers/ studs only

A very warm welcome to all parents, new and returning! This year has looked a little different for us all, but it is full steam ahead in the learning department here at SSPS. It has been great to see so many keen faces back at school.

We are fortunate to have high attendance rates this week, but there is potentially going to be some times throughout the term where your children may be unwell or need to be in isolation. I thought I’d share a few ideas with you that you might find helpful for your child to continue with their learning while in isolation.

Reading

• As often as possible! Picture books, comics, online articles, the back of cereal boxes and novels Prep – Year 2 students have access to Reading Eggs, which is levelled to suit your child’s reading level and a great way to get them engaged in reading.

Writing

• Daily opportunities for writing – this could be writing in a journal, responding to a writing prompt (see some ideas below), writing a letter to someone or writing their own book.

Mathematics

• All students in Prep – 6 have access to Mathletics – an online Maths program with activities that the teachers can set for students to complete.

Play

• Probably most importantly, give your children opportunities to learn through play! Board games, card games, building a cubby, cooking – the opportunities are endless.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to 2022!!  It has been fantastic to see all of the St Saviour's Primary Learners back at school this week.

During the Professional Deveolpment and Planning Days (prior to supervision weeks), all teachers at St Saviour's Primary participated in training relating to our Ignite Learning Project with Education Officer Catherine Kimmorley from Toowoomba Catholic Schools.  

One part of this training was a focus on the learning process and during this time the following questions were asked of the teachers:

What is learning? and How well do the students at St Saviour's Primary understand what learning is?

For your information, Professor Guy Claxton defines learning as:

“Mastering something new. First you don’t understand it or can’t do it; then wrestle with it, flounder intelligently, and begin to get some ideas about how to do it; and then consolidate, hone and broaden your competence through practice in varied settings and contexts.”

Of course, our teachers at St Saviour's are in the business of learning and are constantly introducing new concepts to your children, allowing them to struggle with this new idea and then guiding them to connect their ideas and understand the relationship between them.

Something that may be new to what your idea of learning should be is the idea of allowing students to struggle or 'flounder intelligently'.  Not suprisingly, a survey conducted last year of Years 4-6 students revealed that only 12.5% of students wanted to be challenged in their learning.  However, part of our job as educators is to help our learners realise that struggle and challenge is an important part of the learning process.  

Just a reminder that the St Saviour's Primary Learning Dispositions are there to help your child through this challenging part of learning.  Feel free to discuss these at home or use them at home when your child is learning something new and potentially in that 'struggle' phase.

Student Protection Contacts

The St Saviour's Primary School Protection Contacts are there to assist students, parents/care providers and those working in the school when concerns or disclosures
of abuse, harm or inappropriate behaviour towards students are brought to their notice. 

In 2022, you will see the below poster around the school to remind the students of who the St Saviour's Primary Student Protection Contacts are and  that there is always someone they can talk to if they are feeling unsafe.

Welcome to Term 1 2022:

For those of you who are yet to meet the office staff, we would like to introduce ourselves to you.  Mrs Julie Robinson and Mrs Jodie McMcLachlan work 5 days a week in the office.  Mrs Alex Sleba works Monday - Thursday.  Alex is also our school Work Place Health and Safety officer for 2022.  The office is currently located in the Library which is located on the ground floor of the main admin building.  

The office is open each day from 8.00 am - 4.00 pm each day.  Phone lines are open each day from 8.00 am - 4.00 pm.  

REMINDERS 

Messages:

We understand that at times, messages need to be delivered to students and we aim to always deliver these messages to the classrooms before going home time. To help ensure that all messages are delivered before 3.00 pm we ask that you please allow enough time for the office staff to do this. Often classes are outside or at PE and if messsages are phoned through at 2.55 pm is almost impossible to deliver these messages on time.  We ask that you contact the school no later than 2:45 pm to ensure your child/children receive the message. 

Late Arrivals:

If your child is late to school - it is very important that they are signed in at the office as presenting late, before going up to their classroom.  School commences at 8.30 am each day.  Roll Marking is done between 8.30 am - 8.45 am.  All children who are late, must take a Late Slip up to their classroom teacher.  

Early Departures:

Children who leave school throughout the school day, must be signed out by a parent or guardian in the office.  Children are not permitted to walk out of the school grounds without a parent/guardian during school hours.  They must also be signed back in once they return to school.

Late Pick Up:

If you are late to pick up your child from school, the children are supervised on Lawrence and Perth Street until 3.30 pm.  After 3.30 pm they will be returned to the office, and a parent will be rung about collection.  

Absentees:

Please remember to nofity the school office by 9.00 am each day if your child is absent from school.  You can do this a number of ways.  You can phone and leave a message on the voicemail, you can ring and speak to one of the office ladies or you can submit an an absence form via the parent portal.  For any absences that are unexplained you will receive an sms notification from the school about this absence. If emailing your child's teacher regarding an absence, please make sure you also inform the office also as often teachers do not get to check emails once class starts for the day.  

Sickness:

If your child presents to sick bay and is too unwell to stay at school, the office staff will phone a parent/guardian to come and collect.  It is important to remember that if your child is unwell, particularly in these current times, we do ask that you keep them home until they are feeling better to return to school.  Any child who presents to school with symptoms of feeling unwell will be sent home immediately.  

Parent Portal:

All notifications will be sent home via the Parent Portal.  This includes permission notes for class excursions and school sports carnivals.  Semester 1 and Semester 2 Report Cards are also uploaded to the Portal.  The school calendar is also updated regularly, so please if you are unsure of any dates, check the calendar. 

Medication at school:

Medication at school can be administered by the office staff, however it is very important to note that any medication administered must be prescribed from the doctor with a doctor's label printed on the medication.  We are unable to administer any kind of panadol or paracetemol.  Parents will be rung immediately if a child presents with high temps. A medication form must be completed by a parent prior to any medication being given to a student at school.  

Asthma Medication:

Children who are asthmatic are requried to have their puffer, spacer and asthma medication plan at school.  This includes children who do suffer from seasonal asthma.  All asthma medication is kept in the classroom with the teacher.  If you are yet to send in your child's asthma medication and current plan, we do strongly advise you to do this as soon as possible. 

Head Lice:

At times we do have cases of Head Lice present at school. Please see attached flyer from Qld Health outlining the correct steps in treating head lice.  If Head Lice are detected on your child whilst at school, a parent will be rung and you will be asked to come and collect immediately and commence treatment at home.

School Fees are emailed home each term. You will receive an SMS notification to advise you when school fees have been emailed home.  Term 1 School Fees will be sent home in Week 3. Please note this year we have an all inclusive fee.  Details are on our school website.

Birthday treats:

We love the children celebrating their birthdays at school.  Just a quick reminder that if ice-blocks are brought in, please ensure that they are frozen (particularly Zooper Doopers).  Cup cakes (rather than a whole cake) are welcome however we do ask that you check with your child's teacher first in case of food allergies in that class.

St Saviour's Primary has a Facebook page.  If you like Facebook hop on and like us.  We do post updates and events on Facebook regularly so it is a great way to keep in touch with what is happening in and around our school.

School Crossing Supervisors:

We welcome back our three Crossing Supervisors for 2022.  

Anna Philp, Amy Stewart and Janette McGillivray.  All three ladies will be supervising the crossings in Lawrence Street and Neil Street throughout the school year.

Parking:

Please read the following information regarding the current parking situation in and around the school whilst building works is underway.

Prep Parking:

The Prep carpark is strictly for Prep parents only.  Families who have a current Prep student can use the Prep Car Park for drop off and pick up.  The Prep carpark can become quite congested at peak times - please drive slowly and stop at the pedestrian crossing to check for any families crossing to enter Prep.  

Lawrence Street Parking:

Please remember to take care when driving in Lawrence Street to find a park.  Lawrence Street is our main pick up and drop off location, so it is always very busy at peak times in the morning and afternoon.  The Cathedral carpark can also become very busy so please ensure you take time and drive with care.  Parents can access the Toowoomba Catholic Schools carpark directly opposite our school for pick up and drop off.  Please ensure you cross at the school crossing if you are parking in Lawrence Street and need to cross the road.  No parking in front of the Boarding School on the circular driveway - this is strictly for Boarding School families to access.  

Perth Street Parking:

Parking in Perth Street is minimal.  Buses access this area for drop off and pick up.  If you do park in Perth Street:

• Do not park on the footpath of residents living in Perth Street
• Do not park in front of driveways or block driveways
• Do not park in Bus Zones or No Standing zones which are clearly signed
• Do not J Walk across the street - use the pedestrian crossing
• This area is regularly monitored by Police 
• Children who catch the bus in Perth Street are to wait in the Bus Shelter or near the bus shelter of an afternoon.  A teacher is on bus duty from 3.00pm - 3.30pm each day.

Neil Street Parking:

Children are not permitted to walk up to Neil Street (College) at 3.00 pm for school pick up.  The two exit points at 3.00 pm are Lawrence and Perth Street.  A family member may come down to the Primary School and collect from these pick up spots, however no child is permitted to walk up to Neil Street as we do not provide supervision in this area after 3.00 pm.

Scholastic Bookclub:

St Saviour's Primary offers Bookclub throughout the school year.  Cataglogues are sent home with each child once a term. Ordering is strictly via the Scholastic website (details will be on the catalogues)  No cash is to be sent to school for orders.  Catalogues were issued on Monday for Term 1.

Skool Dayz Uniform Shop:

School Newsletter:

The School Newsletter is sent home each fortnight on a Thursday.  The link will be sent home via the Parent Portal and is always uploaded to our website.

Please refer to the school calendar which is on the Parent Portal to keep up to date with all events and important dates throughout the year at St Saviour's.  It is a great way to keep up to date with what is happening in and around the school and is regularly updated.

Enrolments for Prep 2023 are now being taken and interviews will take place early Term 2.  If you have a son or daughter that is due to commence Prep in 2023 and have not yet filled in an application form we encourage you to do so as soon as possible.

Fitness Club 

Fitness Club is a fun way for your child to work on their fitness with their peers in preparation for the SSPS Cross Country in the last week of Term One. These sessions are offered to students in Year Three to Year Six. Fitness Club will run every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7:15 am - 8.00 am starting on Tuesday the 15th of February 2022 and running till Thursday 24th of March 2022. If you would like your child to join Fitness Club, please grant permission via Parent Portal. Your child is welcome to attend all sessions, once a week or whatever suits your family schedule. These sessions will be run by Mrs McHugh, Mrs Wagner, Mr Hannant and myself. If you have any questions, please email me via brendan.luck@twb.catholic.edu.au. 

Club Connect 

Rugby League Queensland has been organised through Club Connect to deliver rugby league sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:15 pm - 4:00 pm from the 15th of February 2022 to the 24th of March 2022 (six weeks). Club Connect is designed for your child to come and try rugby league with the opportunity to sign up with a club. Year One to Year Three students will attend on Tuesday afternoon and Year Four to Year Six students will attend on Thursday afternoon. Please note that no teacher will be at these sessions, and they will be run by a representative from Rugby League Queensland. If you have any questions regarding the Club Connect afternoon sport or you would like to sign your child/ren up, feel free to contact me at brendan.luck@twb.catholic.edu.au. 

Sporting Schools 

Hockey Queensland has been organised through Sporting Schools to deliver hockey sessions on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15 pm – 4:00 pm from the 16th of February 2022 to the 9th of March 2022 (four weeks) to Year One to Year Six students. There are only 30 spots for this opportunity for your child to come and try hockey in a fun and safe environment. The first 30 parents to email me will secure the spots for this afternoon activity. Please email brendan.luck@twb.catholic.edu.au. Please note that no teacher will be at these sessions, and they will be run by a representative from Hockey Queensland. 

 St Saviour's Primary Swimming Carnival 2022 

St Saviour’s Primary Swimming Carnival will be on the 29th of March from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm at Glennie Aquatic Centre. All students in Year Three to Year Six will participate in this carnival. I will be visiting your child/ren classrooms in the coming weeks to get nominations. Please make sure you talk to your child about what you feel they are confident in swimming. Your child can choose to either swim in 50m or 25m events (not both) in all four strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly). I will also be offering a kick board event for less confident swimmers. Students will catch a bus from St Saviour’s to Glennie at 8.40am and return to school after the carnival. Children can then be picked up at the normal time of 3pm. Please make sure your child/ren bring togs, towel, goggles, swimming cap, swimming bag and food. All items are to be labelled. A house-coloured swimming cap is available for purchase from the school office for $5. The children can wear coloured shirts to support their individual house. If they choose not to do this, they can wear their sport uniform. Thongs are fine to wear to and from the pool. Please, no zinc, face paint or hairspray. A permission form will be sent out via Parent Portal and will include attachments with more information about the carnival including COVID-19 restrictions. Zone and Darling Downs Trials 

All Zone and Darling Downs trials will be placed on Parent Portal. Please check Parent Portal regularly or set up notifications on your phone if you wish for your child to be eligible to trial for Zone and Darling Downs sporting teams as you will be required to obtain paperwork from myself. Welcome back to Tuckshop for 2022!!

This year will be another busy year preparing lots of healthy meals and snacks for our children here at St Saviours. The menu does not change a whole lot through the year, the only exception being sushi. It is only available for ordering through the warmer months and it comes in three different flavours - avocado, tuna mayo and crispy chicken and lettuce.

Special food days are always a big hit with the children. Keep an eye out for posters around the school for upcoming treat days. Our first ‘fun food day’ will be next Monday 14th Feb for Valentines Day. Red fruit cups, love heart fairy bread and churros will all be available to order.

Please, please consider volunteering some of your time to help out in the Tuckshop. Sadly each year our beloved families outgrow St Saviours and we lose numerous volunteers. As we have just welcomed a fresh new group of families , I am seeking help. The Tuckshop simply cannot operate without the generous help of volunteers. Welcome back Toowoomba Catholic Kindergartens and Care (TCKC) OSHC families to 2022!

Although the start of the year has already seen us encounter a Covid challenge, we do want to welcome back continuing families and welcome our new families to the services.   Please see below a few reminders about our services and contact us if you have any questions.  

Bookings – please make these via the xplor application or contact your service coordinator (see contact details below).

Fees – refer to website for updated fees.  Please note fees will be increased yearly according to costs and expenses.  The increase will take effect from the first week of every school year if applicable.  Excursions have been cancelled for the January vacation care and your fees have been adjusted back to the standard fee

• Masks must be worn by children 12 years and over
• Parents must wear a mask when picking up and dropping off children
•  Children are to stay home if they are feeling sick
